The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), in collaboration with the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) and the International Metaverse Association (IMA), proudly announces the 2024 Global Metaverse Conference (GMC). The conference will be held at the aT Center in Seoul on October 18, 2024, under the theme “BRIDGE: Building Responsible Innovation and Developing Global Ethics Standards in the Metaverse.”
South Korea, the world’s first country to implement the Virtual Convergence Industry Promotion Law, will showcase its pioneering K-Metaverse regulations to the global community. The 2024 GMC aims to stimulate dialogue on building new digital frameworks in the Web 3.0 era and promote sustainable global growth.
The opening keynote “The Metaverse and the Future of Korea” will be delivered by Dr. Sam Richards, a renowned sociologist from Penn State University. Richards will highlight how Korea’s cultural strengths, including its community spirit and the global influence of Hallyu (Korean Wave), position the country to lead in the growing metaverse of the Web 3.0 era. He will emphasize the role of these elements in shaping the future of the metaverse and their broader impact on ethical innovation.
Dr. Hyun Dae-Won, President of the IMA, will present a balanced strategy for ethical development in the metaverse ecosystem, focusing on the need for self-regulation in collaboration with governmental oversight. Park Sun-Min, Deputy Head of Public Policy at Google Korea, will discuss corporate strategies utilizing virtual convergence technologies and share case studies showcasing Google’s contributions through platforms such as Google Earth and Google Arts & Culture.
The conference features three key sessions. The first session addresses the integration of AI and metaverse technology, exploring opportunities and ethical challenges. The second session emphasizes ethical education and digital citizenship in the metaverse. The third session explores the economic impact of the metaverse, discussing business models and sustainability.
The event will conclude with a panel discussion moderated by Makana Chock of the IMA, focused on the evolution of the metaverse ecosystem and global standards.
The 2024 GMC will bring together leaders, policymakers, and innovators to discuss the future of the metaverse, focusing on a sustainable digital ecosystem.
